Landscape Trees of the Peak District

The Big Give's Green Match Fund - 22-29 April 2025

Can you be part of something big to help plant more trees in the White Peak?

During the week of 22-29 April, every £1 donated will be doubled by the Green Match Fund – up to a maximum of £10,000.

Why should you donate?

Trees and woodlands are hugely important to the landscape of the Peak District. Planting trees is critical to help tackle climate change and nature loss. And it’s even more important here in the Peak District where tree cover is only 8%, significantly lower than the national average of 13%. Poor management, drainage and disease have all contributed to the shortage of tree cover we experience today.

The White Peak, known for its dramatic limestone dales and rolling farmland, is the area most in crisis. Its wild ravine woodlands are severely fragmented, surrounded by a plateau with just 2% tree cover. This isolation is threatening local wildlife, which depends on connected habitats to move, feed, and breed.

Of those trees remaining in the White Peak, many are ash and may be lost in the coming years to ash dieback. It is estimated we may lose 90% of our ash trees, further affecting the landscape and biodiversity of the Peak District.

Donations will be open from midday on 22nd April.

What difference will it make?

These new trees will begin to link isolated woodlands, creating vital wildlife corridors that support biodiversity. They will begin to create a tapestry of beautiful woody landscapes across the plateau that we can all enjoy. Landscape trees also sustain a unique community of plants and wildlife including lichen, fungi and invertebrates which will be boosted through further planting.

Thanks to the Green Match Fund, your support between 22nd–29th April will go twice as far. A £50 donation becomes £100 — meaning more trees planted, more habitats restored, and a greater legacy for future generations in the Peak District.

Donations will be open from midday on 22nd April.
